Midnight Mysteries Haunted Houdini Edition

Midnight Mysteries Haunted Houdini Edition

This a point and click adventure game that I played in casual mode on a second generation Kindle Fire. The only issues I had were the same ones mentioned by one or two other reviewers: Getting and using inventory items was sometimes glitchy. Sometimes in order to pick something up you had to tap it just right in just the right spot to get it. To use inventory items, you had to drag them to exactly the right spot and drop them there. Watching for the "sparkle" (which may only happen in the casual mode, I don't know for sure) helped, but even then it would sometimes take quite a few attempts to get inventory to work. So if you are pretty sure you are on the right track, make sure you don't give up after only one or two tries. There a few that were especially stubborn.

There is a journal that will give you clues, and which sparkles when something new is added. The only annoying thing about this is that this journal can only be accessed in portrait position, while you will be playing the game in landscape mode. This means you will be constantly craning your neck or twisting your device back and forth.

Once you get to a certain point in the game, quite a ways in, you will be asked to pay (gasp!) 99 cents to continue. This will also get you a hint guide and other bonus content. The hint guide could be set up better. It's in chapters, but it's very confusing as to what chapter you want. I ended up a couple times seeing hint pages of game parts I hadn't reached yet, and had to click away fast to avoid being spoiled. But if you really get stuck it helps.

The story is good, and easier to follow than the one in the other MumboJumbo game I played, Salem Witch Trials. That game was good too, though. There are hidden object scenes in this game, but not too many, which for me is a good thing. The inventory items are also named so you don't have to guess as to what they are. The game is pretty long, at least I thought so, and well worth the 99 cents.

  1. This is a hidden object mystery detective type game that is very well made with very good graphics. It's not perfect, but if you enjoy these type of games you will really enjoy this one. The story actually makes some kind of sense, the subject matter is interesting, yes you must buy the full program but it's worth a dollar. Also don't forget to get the free strategy guide. You'll probably need it! Great job on this one!

  2. This is the third 'historic' (not sure how much is true, how much is speculation) game from MUMBOJUMBO's 'Midnight Mysteries'. The Salem Witch Trials, Mark Twain, and now Harry Houdini. All three are winners. The background sounds and music are perfectly chosen to add to the eerie atmosphere. Top-notch graphics, a plot you can follow, lots of mini-puzzles (my favorite!), a free strategy guide (you'll need it!), and hours and hours of gameplay, all for 99!

I had the same problem with picking up inventory, etc., that other reviewers have mentioned. Be persistent and you'll do just fine. That was the only problem I had, and it didn't bug me enough to lower my 5-star rating. Played on my Kindle Fire 2nd gen. I highly recommend.

  5. Thus game along with Salem Witch Trials and the newest midnight mysteries game that is out are excellent. Great graphics and unique story lines. I love trying to find all of the shamrock throughout the game. Some of them can be quite Hart to find. You do not have unlimited hints in this one but are started off with 1 hint (crow). If you need to use it or accidentally do like I did you get another one in a short amount of time.
Every once in awhile something does not register but there are no real issues in this game. I hope this company brings out a lot more of these types of games. I will be getting every one of them.
These games are not so easy that they are boring and are a good length. I hate some games that you barely get into and it is over. There is a lot to do in these games, puzzles, hidden object scenes and combining objects together to complete tasks.
    Thanks for another winning game.

  6. The game graphics, zoom, music and story is fantastic. Hidden object and mini games are good, as well. You really don't want to put it down. Works wonderfully on my Kindle Fire HD 8.9, NO glitches. Talking to the ghosts that help you along was a treat, and I am 62 and love this stuff.

  7. I loved the game. The storyline is extremely interesting from beginning to end. The graphics are crisp and beautifully done. The puzzles are challenging. The game loaded easily with no gliches during game play. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and highly recommend it.
